Search Engine Optimization has certainly evolved over the years. For a long time we spent a LONG TIME doing keyword research for each client and figuring out the subtle differences between words and phrases and how those should be used, in different parts of the United States, is it soda or pop or a global client is it holiday or vacation. It’s inevitable that between machine learning and human spamming the best practices would shift.

Looks like you really don’t need to fret, the “trick” has always been great consistent content and your site would rank.

Here is a graphic which explains the “old seo” and the new. I think you will find this pretty interesting.

Some quick tips:

  • Always spend a few minutes to customize your meta titles & descriptions.
  • Optimize each image.
  • Produce content on a regular basis (BLOG, BLOG, BLOG!)
  • Don’t forget about social and engagement.
  • Ask for backlinks where ever it makes sense (a board you serve on, schools you are an alumni of, businesses you sponsor, etc).
